I have taught special education for the past 17 years. Last school year, I got remarried which also meant relocation and spent the entire year (2010-2011) searching for a special education teaching job. I applied for over 300 positions in the state of Georgia. Because of having a Bachelor's, and Master's in Special Education as well as an Educational Specialist Degree in Curriculum & Instruction. I do realize that the economy is extremely tight but it was extremely frustrating to not be able to secure employment and to have 16 years of experience, and advanced degrees as well. The brand new teachers with only a Bachelor's degree were being hired instead of the seasoned veterans.

I was hoping I misunderstood this new "solution" for the shortage of SPED teachers in Georgia, but I was wrong. BTW, I am Ga SPED teacher, too.

It's got to be cost effective, too, for the brilliant mind(s) that thought this one up. Sigh..

Can you discuss the consequences for districts if not HQ or is that being changed too?

Here in NC this varies by school district. Some let you teach if you have a psychology degree even though you aren't necessarily working with emotional/behavior disorder....no test required....I am taking courses for a certificate and volunteering in spec ed clasrooms 2x wk...no way could I teach on my own yet

I've taught special education in self-contained classrooms for twenty years. Currently I am teach middle schoolers with Moderate Mental Handicaps or more intense autism. I'm taking classes on line for autism right now and already have a master's degree and undergrad degree in special education. I infuriates me. I highly qualified and proud of it. Wow. It used to be only 3 years for a provisional. I may have to do a post of my own on this to clarify, because I'm not sure whether these provisionally certified teachers are considered HQ. Not being HQ does pose some consequences for districts using this method to meet shortages.

But becoming HQ and getting a renewable certificate is only another GACE test away.
