Wii for the classroom?

Yes, I am getting a Wii Nintendo console, along with Wii Fit and multiple programs/ games for my classroom. This is thanks to some very helpful and supportive parents in my classroom. During one of my student's IEP meeting, the issue of hand/ eye coordination was brought up. The student the meeting was held for was born with a syndrome that is defined my a mid-brain defect. This means she does not know her place in space. When she was born, her parents were told she would have very limited capability and would develop in a typical severe/profound intellectual level. Due to amazing parents, early interventions, terrific teachers and her own strength and will, this student has immensely surpassed every expectation of all doctors and therapists. She is walking, using her fine motor, reading, etc...
Back to the meeting: Anyway the issue of her hand/ eye coordination was brought up and her parents commented on how successful she was with Wii baseball!! I mean she was hitting the ball! Amazing, how can a child who is missing the part of her brain which defines her motor processes perform such a difficult task?
So if simple Wii sports games can improve her coordination, what could Wii fit do, what about other programs? So in conclusion, the father explained the benefits to the principal and ....... and the outcome comes to be: a Wii in my classroom! Who knew? I love it when people think outside of the box and make a new discovery. Thank you, (you know who you are) Also don't forget to check out the low incidence worksheets!

Yay! Comments!

You might also consider using the wiimote part of the Wii to make your own interactive whiteboard.

That is amazing that you had a parent with guts enough to go for this and a principal who actually bought into it. It will be interesting to see how this will fit into your classroom.

I think a wii is a great idea for the class room. The games they have now can really help the children. I wish my son's school had a teacher like you in it. You seem to know how to really relate to the kids and get inside their heads.
